Meet the Artist

Tula B. Strong is a Liberian-American choreographer, teaching artist, and banjoist. She is passionate about art that weaves dance, storytelling, and music. As such, you can catch Tula happily choreographing within the spheres of musical theatre, theatre, film, and concert dance! As a dance educator, Tula teaches Afro-Contemporary dance technique informed by the movement forms she trains in such as Dunham Technique, Afro-Cuban Rumba, Jamaican Dancehall, and Hawaiian Hula. She currently serves as a lecturer at Cal State Fullerton’s Department of Theatre and Dance. You can also find Tula teaching dance pop-ups for professionals in the Greater Los Angeles region. As a training banjoist under the tutelage of Old-Time Musician, David Bragger, Tula is passionate about Traditional American Folk music history, the Black legacy within Banjo music, and the ways in which dance can overlap with banjo traditions. Tula has been honored to have her work receive support and recognition from California Art Council's Individual Artists Fellowship, Inland Film Festival, Charlotte Black Film Festival, Blavity’s BlavityTV, the National Black Arts’ Artist Project Fund, San Bernardino Arts Connection's Arts Innovator Micro-Grant, Californian's for the Arts - IE Region's Artists as Second Responder Award, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute’s DEAR Artist Retreat, & Princeton University’s The Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts. Alongside the efforts of LA Based Choreographer Marianna Varviani, Tula also co-leads LA Dance Calendar: an online platform providing one centralized location to discover all things DANCE in Greater Los Angeles.
